ICE SKATING ON WINTER BREAK

A lot of things surprised me when we moved to NY, one of them was winter break. You see we don’t have winter break in Israel, it is just a long never ending few months of school, as a student I would only dream of a few days off in the middle of the endless cold winter. This morning, Yosef my oldest son went back to school after a 10 day winter break. I was looking forward to these few days off only to spend some extra time just me and him. Let me tell you we both enjoyed every minute of it! We had some lazy days in pj’s at home and other days full of outdoor winter activities. One day we woke up bright and early, bundled up and started our day visiting daddy at work, our next stop was a visit to The National Museum of the American Indian (I probably enjoyed it more than he did) and our last and favorite stop was ice skating at Bryant Park. This was Yosef’s first time ice skating, he started off a bit nervous and was afraid to fall, he refused to let go of the side bar for one second and wanted to leave after just 3 rounds. I told him how great he is doing for the first time ice skating and I managed to convince him to try just a bit more (I did bribe him with some tik-taks). Finally, he let go of the side bar and got so into it, even after two hours he didn’t want to leave! I loved our little conversations throughout the day, 5-year-olds are an endless source of “why” and “how” questions. They have an insatiable desire to understand how everything works, so I did have some explaining to do about how elevators work as we went up 25 floors to daddy’s office or attempt to explain the concept of numbers when he asked if 100 is a big or small number.

It is amazing what a 5 year old can teach us about life, the smallest things excites them, I always wonder why we become so darn serious as adults. Not that I want to be a 5 year old again but this day more than just being a fun day with my child was a great reminder to laugh every day and try new things. xx
